Returning from the Battle of Kadesh, Ramesses II wished to reinforce the divine character of Pharaoh's function. He decided a complete architectural program to affirm the glory of the sovereign all over the region. The Egyptian Nubia, South of Aswan, was a little populated place surrounded by deserts. Why did Ramsesses II make his decision to erect here several sanctuaries, among them Abu Simbel? Did the Pharaoh intend to impress Nubian populations or enemies coming from the South? This is only part of the reality, because temples played an important role in maintaining civilization and natural balance.

JOAN OF ARC'S HOMELAND: DOMREMY AND VAUCOULEURS

Around Nancy, in Lorraine, let us discover the homeland of Joan of Arc where her heroic epos began. Domrémy was a border town in the Middle-Ages, surrounded by ramparts. As it became a "Royal Town" in 1365, it was governed in the name of the King of France by the Lord Robert de Beaudricourt. This is when Joan of Arc, a young peasant aged 16, came and talked to this governor on May 13, 1428 and stated she was the only person capable of delivering France from the British. Baudricourt laughed and ordered the young girl be taken back to her father "with a good slap in her face". However, Joan of Arc proclaiming her mission, gained the people little by little, to such extent that the inhabitants of Vaucouleurs clubbed together in order to buy her a horse and equipment. LE PAYS DE JEANNE D'ARC : DOMREMY ET VAUCOULEURS

A la demande de mes fidèles lecteurs anglophones, je vous emmène au Pays de Jeanne d'Arc, à Domrémy et Vaucouleurs. Cette dernière était au Moyen-Age une ville frontière entourée dès le XIIème siècle d'une enceinte de murailles. Devenue "Ville Royale" en 1365, elle était gouvernée au nom du Roi de France par le sire Robert de Baudricourt quand Jeanne d'Arc, petite paysanne de 16 ans, vint le 13 mai 1428 se présenter à lui, se donnant comme seule capable de délivrer le royaume des anglais. Baudricourt ne fit qu'en rire et ordonna qu'on la ramène chez son père "avec de bons soufflets". Cependant, Jeanne d'Arc, proclamant sa mission gagna peu à peu le peuple, si bien que les Valcolorois se cotisèrent pour lui acheter un cheval et un équipement. Souvent méconnues et pourtant si extraordinaires, les églises baroques d'Amérique Latine ont une longue histoire qui remontent aux Aztèques, aux Incas et aux Indiens. Au début du XVIème siècle, les moines qui arrivèrent en Amérique Centrale ou du Sud avec les conquistadors espagnols et portuguais se trouvèrent devant des civilisations remarquables et très différentes. Des civilisations pour qui la chrétienté ne signifiait rien, et pourtant en moins de 100 ans, après des conquêtes très controversées, de vastes églises furent construites partout dans le Nouveau Monde. Seuls quelques ecclésiastiques furent chargés des plans et les artistes locaux accomplirent les travaux.

Often unknown but so extraordinary, the Baroque churches of Latin America have such an interesting history behind them, namely from the Aztecs, Incas and Indians. At the beginning of the XVIth century, the monks that reached South and Central America with the Spanish and Portuguese conquitadors faced remarkable and different civilizations compared to theirs. Civilizations for whom Christendom did not mean anything. However, less than a century after the beginning of the controversial conquests, vast churches were under construction in the New World. A few ecclesiastics were in charge of the drawings but the autochthonal populations carried out the rest of the works.
