LAFAYETTE AND THE FRENCH-AMERICAN FRIENDSHIP

Rochefort, on the French Atlantic Coast, is a beautiful town whose architecture dates back from the 17th and 18th centuries. This was a former Naval Arsenal. "L'Hermione", a large frigate on which LaFayette left Rochefort for Boston to help George Washington and the Insurgents in 1780, was built here. An identical replica is being rebuilt today on the site of the arsenal and is due to sail over to Boston within a few years. Rochefort is ideally located on the banks of the Charente River, just a few miles from the ocean. Rochefort, sur la Côte Atlantique est une ville splendide dont l'architecture remonte aux 17ème et 18ème siècles. Ce fut autrefois un arsenal maritime. L'Hermione, une grande frégate sur laquelle LaFayette quitta Rochefort pour Boston afin de venir en aide à George Washington et aux Insurgés en 1780, fut construite ici. Une réplique à l'identique est actuellement en construction sur le site de l'Arsenal et doit partir pour Boston dans quelques années.

Rochefort est idéalement situé sur les rives de la Charente, à quelques kilomètres de l'océan.
